Directional ease: slack belongs in depth and height, never width

The sources describe failure in both directions — Patio Productions notes that a loose cover blows off in wind and still lets dust settle, while a too-tight cover can damage the furniture or be a struggle to get on — but none of them says how much slack is acceptable, or on which axis.

Custom makers state the useful number outright. Covers & All builds to submitted measurements and adds 1 to 2 inches of installation leeway so the cover goes on and off without a fight. That figure applies to Covers & All's custom covers; no source states a tolerance for standard covers. Patio Productions makes the other half of the point: a cover long enough to touch the ground gets ruined by standing water, so longer is not automatically safer.

Check which number the chart is publishing. No source explains how listed cover dimensions relate to furniture dimensions — whether a cover advertised at a given width fits furniture of that width or is cut oversize by some margin is left unstated, so it is worth asking the seller before ordering.

Round sets, mixed heights, and what state to measure in

Two published guides give different inputs for the same round set. AuthenTEAK says measure the table's diameter, edge straight across to edge. Patio Productions says rope the chairs under the table and measure the circumference of the bundle, plus height. The contradiction is left unresolved: none of the sources explains why circumference would be used instead of diameter, how to convert between them, or which method the covers on sale are cut to. Patio Productions does say to tuck the chairs under the table and rope them together before measuring, and to use a circular cover with a drawcord. If an umbrella runs through the table, AuthenTEAK says the cover has to be a 'Hole' style. Mixed heights: measure to the tall end

Patio Productions says to record both the highest and lowest points of a piece rather than one height. No source says what the second, lower number is used for. Patio Productions does advise a drawcord that wraps 360° around the piece for furniture with odd angles.

State matters too. Covers & All says to measure the piece fully assembled, including legs, handles and any protrusions. Patio Productions says to push the chairs under the table before measuring a square or rectangular set. No source in this evidence addresses whether to measure with cushions on or off, or how to handle stacked furniture.
